WHY SOLID OAK?

OAKJAVORINASOLID WOOD

One of the most durable materials commonly available for the production of timeless furniture is oak wood. Its main advantages include hardness, strength and toughness. It is the longest lasting of all local woods, withstanding weather conditions as well as alternating wet and dry conditions. That is why oak was used to make barrels, mill wheels and even piles for bridges. Because of all these properties, oak has also been a favourite choice of furniture makers for centuries.

The aesthetic advantage of oak wood is its colour balance and its rich but non-dominant grain. Manufacturers further enhance its appearance by using only the heartwood, which forms a kind of backbone to the trunk. Such furniture is therefore characterised by a minimalist, unified design. For example, a suk in our wood may only have a diameter that can be concealed under the pinky finger of the hand.

A witness to time

The advent of solid wood furniture is as if a new member has arrived in the household. An oak table will age with the whole family and record all the stages of its life. It will bear childhood games, meals and memories of parties with spilled red wine with dignity. However, the wood needs a finish to remain undamaged for as long as possible.

How best to care for the wood

It may seem like the easiest way to go is to choose varnished wood, but this buries the all-natural material under a layer of man-made substances. The advantage of this treatment is the long-term 'preservation' of the wood, which does not need to be cared for any further. The disadvantage is the loss of the naturalness of the wood and the difficulty of repairing any damage. A completely varnished surface cannot be repaired locally in domestic conditions and a complete re-sanding is inevitable.

The second option is to impregnate solid wood with natural oils and waxes. The advantage of surface oiling is also the possibility of repairing minor dents by sanding in a domestic environment. It is enough to gently sand the damaged area in the direction of the grain, clean off the dust and re-oil locally. The wax hardens and the furniture is as good as new.But Javorina's approach goes one step further, it is a natural treatment based on oils and waxes. It is applied at the factory to the most stressed parts of the furniture, such as table tops, which can easily resist food stains and glass wheels. This treatment is environmentally friendly and ensures that the wood is resistant to unwanted staining from all aggressive foods such as red wine, coffee, chocolate or beetroot.
